David Wagner, Ph.D., Author

David Wagner is an emeritus professor of social work and sociology at the University of Southern Maine (1988-2016).

He is the author of twelve books, including Checkerboard Square: Culture and Resistance in a Homeless Community, which won the C. Wright Mills Award and The New Temperance: America’s Obsession with Sin and Vice which won the Northeast Popular Culture Association Book Award. He is also a winner of an Outstanding Book notice from Choice magazine, the library journal, for his book Confronting Homelessness.

David was an undergraduate and graduate student at Columbia University in New York City, receiving his doctorate from the Graduate Center at the City University of New York. As well as a professor at the University of Southern Maine, he was a Distinguished Visiting Professor at California State University at Dominguez Hills in 2009 and an adjunct there in Sociology in the 2010s.

He now lives in Seal Beach, CA. with his wife Marcia B. Cohen and his bernerdoodle Winslow.
